Experiencing hair loss after Covid?

August is hair loss awareness month which is very serendipitous to my hair life right now. I experienced  Covid in early June and about 8 weeks after I began to shed large amounts of hair after washing. So much so, that I started looking into reasons for sudden hair loss. I came across multiple articles from New York Times to WebMD about hair loss after Covid. It is definitely a common condition with people after recovering from Covid. The condition is called Telogen Effluvium  which occurs after viral infections, high fever, and stress. Telegon Effluvium or "TE" is a condition that sheds an accelerated abnormal amount of hair. Telegon is the normal shedding process of hair's growth that occurs every 2-3 years in the spring or fall. Telegon sheds 10% of you hair as new hair are produced in the follicle while TE sheds up to 50% or more over a 3-6 month period. The good news is, it does grow back eventually.

In my personal experience with Covid, I had very mild symptoms and no fever, however the hair loss is real and it's scary! I have shed about 40% of my hair in 4 weeks, and it continues. I have spent hours researching articles, remedies and even had an appointment with my Doctor. I am having bloodwork done to check my Thyroid, check my Iron, Copper, Testosterone, B12 and Zinc levels. I have also joined a Facebook support group for Covid hair loss.  I have started a supplemental regiment of Biotin, Collagen Peptides, and an anti-inflammatory called Quercetin. Topically I am using Aveda Invati Scalp Revitalizer and Oway Micro Stimulating Hair Bath and Densifying Remedy. It is important to brush your hair regularly to remove the fallout prior to washing. This also stimulates the scalp and increases blood flow to the follicle. Another symptom of TE hair loss post Covid is an itchy and burning scalp. This is due to the inflammation and also new hairs growing in. It is very annoying, but using Lavender oil or Rosemary oil can help reduce the itch while calming your nerves.

Stress is another common cause for hair loss, so it is important to reduce stress. This is easier said than done, losing your hair is a terrifying experience. It's important to find support while going through this experience. Talk to your hairstylist, join a support group and look into changing your style to accommodate your new density and texture. I have had very long, thick and healthy hair for many years, I am now looking into my options of a new more natural hair color and a shorter length. I am grieving the loss of my long hair but I am also staying positive about a new look. Most people I have talked to about their Covid hair loss have assured me that it does grow back, and in most cases curlier and thicker!! If you need to talk to someone and get advice on styles and solutions, I am more willing to help you!!
